Fanfare! Applause! Confetti! Four years after BONGEN’s debut album “Hagel Graupel Weltraumschott” (Hail, Graupel, Space Hatch), the follow-up is now here, with the equally unwieldy title “Kunst {oder was mit Tieren}” (Art {or something with animals}).
The 13 songs tell of searching, struggling and doubting, of growing pains or – as it says in “Ich werde besser” (I’m getting better) – of the usual trouble with gravity. But if you’re going to fall flat on your face, then do it with style. And humor. It never ends in resignation. There is always a ray of hope, an idea of how things could be. Musically, “Kunst” moves between indie rock and singer/songwriter. Added to this are elements of folk, country, and blues. The instrumentation is correspondingly diverse: accordion, mandolin, Rhodes piano, home organ, glockenspiel, harp, cajon, cabasa, bongos, shaker, triangle… – anything goes, as long as it helps the song.
